Nigerian sprinter Raymond Ekevwo has become the fastest man in Africa following his 9.96s finish in the men’s 100m at the ongoing 2019 All African Games in Morocco.
Ekevwo’s fast finish in the 100m gave Nigeria another Gold Medal at the 2019 African Games in Morocco. Cote d’Ivoire’s Arthur Cisse finished second to win Silver Medal while another Nigerian runner Usheoritse Itsekiri ran a Personal Best of 10.02s to take Bronze.
Ekevwo becomes only the second Nigerian to run sub-10s since 2013 with Divine Oduduru the other runner.
This is also the first time Nigeria will be winning the Gold Medal from the men’s 100m event since 2007 when Olusoji Fasuba achieved that feat.
Speaking after his victory in Morocco, the new African fastest runner said he worked hard for this great day.
“I just want to give glory to God, I have been working for this day, I just came here did the right thing and executed by race, I just feel very happy.
“I feel proud as a Nigerian, I am now looking forward to the World Championship, this is like a strategy race, I am looking forward to the Championship in Doha,” Ekevwo said
Aside from Fasuba and now Ekevwo, the other Nigerians that have won 100m gold at the African Games are Chidi Imoh, Davidson Ezinwa and Deji Aliu.
