An employee of Radio Bayelsa identified as Simon Onu has been shot dead during a campaign rally of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday ahead of the state’s governorship election on Saturday.
Simon Onu was killed during an attack that occurred around 2 p.m in Nembe Local Government Area of the state, which is said to be a stronghold of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The attack was said to have been caused by thugs loyal to the rival APC led by Gabriel Jonah and one Kodjo Sam, who tried to stop the rally from taking place.
The attackers were alleged to have also opened fire at the protocol bus of the Bayelsa State Government House at a junction between Bassambiri and Ogbolomabiri.
A spokesperson for the PDP campaign council in the state, Fidelis Soriwei said thugs led by some APC leaders fired at them in a bid to prevent the gubernatorial rally of the party.
“We were going to do live coverage of the rally that is why we went with OB Van. Our people, including our media crew, are trapped at Nembe.
“How do you have a state where you can go to the governor’s town to do rally, but the ruling party cannot go to Nembe to do rally?” said Mr Soriwei who is also the spokesperson to the Bayelsa governor, Seriake Dickson.
“There was no fight, you just brought out guns and started shooting at people. These are the same people who were shouting that PDP was stockpiling guns. Now, look at what has happened!”
“One of the PDP members died of gunshot injuries while several others sustained serious injuries and have been rushed to the hospital.”
Governor Seriake Dickson, who condemned the violence, urged security agencies to take full control of the situation so that the PDP rally could hold peacefully.
