Katsina State Governor, Aminu Bello Masari has signed into law a bill restricting the movement of tricycles and motorcycles from 7 pm to 6 am in the state.
The state Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Alhaji Ahmed El-Marzuq announced this shortly after the Governor assented to the Bill at the Government House, Katsina.
The commissioner explained that the law will come into effect from Monday the 20th of January, 2020, adding that, operators of identified vehicles would not be on the roads between the stated period.
“Section 5, subsection 2 of the 1999 constitution as amended conferred on the governor, the power to sign the order.
“The order is Motorcycle and Tricycle Restriction Movement 2020. Under the order, he has prohibited the movement of motorcycles statewide from the hours of 7 pm to 6 am with effect from January 20, 2020.
El-Marzuq announced that the only exception to the law is members of the armed forces, the police and other para-military agencies such as the civil defense, road safety corp, immigration, customs, NDLEA amongst others.
He explained that the government took the decision because of the discovery that most of the kidnappings were being carried out with tricycles and motorcycles in not only the eight Frontline local governments but the entire state.
The Attorney General, however, revealed that violators of the law would be jailed for up to one year and an option of fine or both as prescribed by the penal code.
He expressed the hope that citizens would cooperate with the government and law enforcement agencies to enforce the law for the security well being of all in the state.
