A former Director-General of the Imo Broadcasting Corporation (IBC), Theophilus Okere has allegedly stabbed his wife, Beatrice, to death at Imerinwe community in the Ngor-Okpala local government area of Imo State.
The 86-year-old man was alleged to have carried out the act on Monday ‘unknowingly’ as sources say he had been suffering from ‘advanced dementia’.
Dementia is a term for diseases and conditions characterised by a decline in memory, language, problem-solving and other thinking skills that affect a person’s ability to perform everyday activities.

Sources reportedly said the family had been managing Okere’s dementia for some time, and everybody in the the village are aware of his health.
“He (Pa Okere) was having advanced dementia and everyone within the village knows his health condition. He didn’t know that he had killed his wife because when he was asked about her, he said she was sleeping.
“We took him to the hospital; they said we should come after the pandemic. So we couldn’t take him to the hospital because of this Coronavirus. You know how hospitals react to cases like this,” one of the sources said.
Another source said that few weeks ago; the man had gone to the village church, reporting that his vehicle had been stolen while the car was parked in the house.
Okere’s wife, who was 77 years, was described as a retiree of the Imo State Polytechnic, Umuagwo. The couple had been married for 50 years.
Orlando Ikeowu, spokesman of the Imo state police command, who confirmed the incident, told newsmen that the police had commenced investigation into the matter.
