Abiola Ajimobi, a former Nigerian senator who finished his second term as Oyo State governor last year, has died at age of 70.
A close source to the former governor confirmed that Mr Ajimobi died on Thursday at about 4pm in a private hospital in Lagos after spending weeks in intensive care for coronavirus complications.
Mr Ajimobi’s passing came a week after he was rumoured to have died at the same private hospital. That rumour turned to be false.
He was first hospitalised in early June after contracting the deadly virus that has now sickened millions and claimed nearly 500,000 lives across the world.
Due to his health condition, Ajimobi could not resume his newly appointed position as the Acting National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Last weekend, APC members under the aegis of the Oyo State Aspirants Forum, declared a three-day fasting and prayer session for the former governor.
APC called for the prayers following reports that Ajimobi is currently on life support machine after slipping into coma last Thursday for the second time as a result of COVID-19 complications.
The 70-year-old ex-governor had been on life support machine since Friday, June 19, 2020, after he slipped into a deep coma and may not make any recovery going by the observations of medical experts around him.
A reliable source close to the ex-governor disclosed last Monday that Ajimobi has had a lung surgery since being hospitalised but made no progress while his kidneys have also failed.
It was reliably gathered that doctors treating Ajimobi, last Friday, informed his family that his situation had defied every medical intervention and that only a miracle can bring him back to life.
Ajimobi, who governed Oyo State between 2011 and 2019, was survived by his wife and children.
