Court Orders Unilorin Undergraduate To Clear Drainage For Three Months Over Romance Scam

Kwara State High Court has sentenced a fourth year student of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Akinsanya Olamide Ridwan, to three months of community service for committing romance scam.

Ridwan was convicted on Monday by Justice Sikiru Oyinloye after being arraigned on a one-count charge, bordering on internet fraud and other fraud-related offences by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The culprit was accused of pretending to be a white man called Alex James to defraud an unsuspecting white woman, Stewart Sonia, on a dating site called Hangout.

The charge read:

“That you,Akinsanya Riwan (a.k.a Alex James) sometime in March, 2020 or thereabout at Ilorin, Kwara State, within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court attempted to commit an offence of cheating by impersonation by pretending and representing yourself to be a white man called Alex James to an unsuspected white woman, Stewart Sonia on a dating site called Hangout as it is contained in your gmail account: alexjames789123@gmail.com and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 95 of the Penal Code Laws of Northern Nigeria”

Ridwan pleaded guilty before the court and was sentenced to community service and a fine of N50,000 by Justice Sikiru Oyinloye.

He was ordered to clear the drainage from Bekind Filling Station near Tipper Garage, Tanke up to the gate of the University of Ilorin for three months commencing from September 2.

Justice Oyinloye said the convict must get a notice of clearance from the Registrar of the University of Ilorin, and the Kwara State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service. Failure to do so would attract six months imprisonment.

KanyiDaily recalls that Kwara State High Court had also ordered a man, Kolade Emmanuel Balogun, to control traffic for three months, having been found guilty of committing Internet fraud.
