Paris Saint-Germain superstar, Neymar was one of five players sent off following a fracas during during a match with Marseille that ended with a mass brawl.
The world’s most expensive player received a straight red card after punching Marseille’s defender, Alvaro Gonzalez, as PSG lost 1-0 to their bitter rivals.
The clash saw an incredible 12 yellow cards shown by referee Jerome Brisard inside normal time as tensions flared on the pitch – with five red cards.
PSG midfielder Leandro Paredes was sent off for hitting out at Darío Benedetto, which sparked a scuffle between the two teams. After facing up to one another, full-back Layvin Kurzawa saw red after repeatedly hitting Jordan Amavi, who was also given his marching orders for kicking the Frenchman.
After all four players were sent off, Neymar was also shown a red following a VAR review which shows him throwing a punch at Alvaro Gonzalez during the 99th minute.
Neymar sarcastically applauded the referee as he left the field and he was heard telling the assistant referee that he was racially abused on the touchline.
There is likely to be a wide investigation into the incident with Neymar facing a minimum three-match ban for violent conduct. And he was clearly fuming when he took to Twitter in the aftermath of the controversy.
The first part of Neymar’s tweet, which was posted in his native Portuguese, translated as “VAR catching my ‘aggression’ is easy … now I want to see the image of the racist calling me ‘MONO HIJO DE PUTA’ (monkey motherfucker) … that I want to see! What’s up?”
The separate tweet is translated as “The only regret I have is for not being in the face of this asshole” – which has been widely interpreted to mean he regrets not punching him in the face.
This is coming weeks after Neymar, who was brought into PSG to help them win the Champions League, was left in tears following his side 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich during the Champions League final.
