The staff union in the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) have embarked on strike over welfare issues and exposure to coronavirus.
This was contained in a communiqué signed by the President of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, NIMC branch, Lucky Michael, and its Secretary, Odia Victor.
In the notice of strike, the association asked all NIMC staff to report to their duty posts but do nothing starting today January 7th, 2020.
KanyiDaily reports that over 100 million Nigerians are yet to link their SIM cards to National Identity Numbers (NIN), causing huge crowds to gather at the various offices of NIMC in breach of the COVID-19 protocol.
According to the communiqué, the strike had become necessary due to the exposure of staff to COVID-19 risks, lack of personal protective equipment, irregularities in promotion and poor funding.
The Association said staff of the Agency have been infected with COVID-19 and the Federal Government have not taken adequate measures to curtail the spread and ensure the safety essential staff at enrollment centres.
KanyiDaily recalls that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) had last month asked all telecoms firms to disconnect the SIM cards of all persons who have not integrated their NIN with their phone lines by the end of January.
