Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Rocks Ankara On Her First Day As WTO Director-General [Photos]

Nigeria former Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has resumed work as the director general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

Okonjo-Iweala, who is the first woman and the first African to lead WTO, was seen rocking African print “Ankara” with her trademark head tie as she resumed duty on Monday, March 1, 2021.

The 66-year-old Nigerian economist was received into office by officials of the trade body and a few journalists at WTO’s headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

On its official Twitter handle, the trade body said: “Welcome to Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on her first day as WTO Director-General! She makes history as the first woman and first African to take up this post.”

Speaking to newsmen on her first day, Okonjo-Iweala said she is “coming into one of the most important institutions in the world and we have a lot of work to do. I feel ready to go.”

KanyiDaily recalls that the WTO had appointed Okonjo-Iweala as the first African and first woman to lead the organisation on February 15, 2021.

Her appointment comes after US President, Joe Biden, endorsed her candidacy following the withdrawal of the only remaining contender, South Korean Trade Minister Yoo Myung-hee.
