A 200 level Political Science student of Abia State University, George Nnamdi, has been arrsted for allegedly faking his own kidnap.
Nnamdi was arrested by the institution’s internal security after he lied to his friends on the phone that he was abducted by six heavily armed men, and hid in his lodge off the university campus.
Speaking to newsmen after his arrest, Nnamdi, said he sent a text message to his friend around 3AM that he has been kidnapped by six men carrying AK-47 rifles alongside other three students just to see how the friend would react.
He, however, claimed that he had no criminal intention in engaging in such act and appealed for forgiveness for the pains caused the university as a result expensive joke.
A friend of the suspect and 300 level Mass Communication student, Faith Godson, said she received a text message from the suspect that he has been kidnapped.
Godson said she immediately alerted the university security personnel, who swung into action and arrested Nnamdi, who was hiding in his lodge off the university campus.
Reacting to the incident, the Chief Security Officer ABSU, Retired Navy Commander ThankGod Evulobi, said they received a distress call that a student has been kidnapped and swung into action only to discover that the supposed victim faked his own kidnap.
He added that the university senate will take appropriate action against the him inline with the rules and regulations guiding institution.
As at the time of filing this report, the suspect was still in custody of ABSU security while the verdict of the university senate is being awaited.
This is happening less than one week after three students of the university were abuducted by armed men on their way to Okigwe in Imo State.
