The Senator representing Lagos Central, Remi Tinubu has sparked outrage among Nigerians after she called her fellow woman a thug during the South-West zonal public hearing of the constitution review.
Remi Tinubu, who is leading the Senate Committee on Review of the 1999 Constitution in the South-West, was involved in a shouting match with some Nigerians who attended the event on Wednesday at the Marriot Hotel in Lagos.
It was gathered that while residents were queuing to register before they were allowed into the venue of the event. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu came in and was ushered in through the backdoor, after which the front door was shut.
After ushers tinformed those on the queue that registration had closed for the day, the residents who were yet to register refused to leave the queue, protesting their exclusion from the event.
It was at this moment that some lawmakers from Oyo state passed the queue and were about to be ushered in, leading to commotion at the front entrance.
When the Oyo lawmakers were about to be ushered through the backdoor, the unregistered residents followed them, preventing them from being allowed into the hall.
However, after some consultation with the personnel at the door, Senator Remi Tinubu showed up at the backdoor to allow the lawmakers in.
As she was about to do this, a woman who reportedly complained about being denied entry, was said to have decried the partial treatment and voiced out her frustration.
The senator, after beckoning on her and two others, reportedly called the woman a thug for speaking too loud.
Tinubu’s statement infuriated those on the queue, who insisted that she shuold apologize for using such derogatory word.
But the senator refused saying: “I will not apologise for what I said. I saw it and I said it.”
A video captured at the scene showed people criticizing the senator for being “rude” to the woman.
“Madam senator, don’t call her a thug. You begged us to vote for you…” a man at the scene said.
