Olusegun Falola, one of the lawyers of Yoruba freedom fighter, Sunday Adeyemo popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has revealed why his client was chained by security agents in Benin Republic.
KanyiDaily had reported how Sunday Igboho was arrested on July 19, by the International Criminal Police Organisation at the Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou, Republic of Benin.
Igboho was arrested with his Germany-based wife, Ropo, at the airport while they reportedly tried to catch an Air France flight to Germany around 8 pm on Monday.
Although the Cour De’appal De Cotonou ruled that Ropo should be released unconditionally as there were no charges against her, Igboho was taken to detention, where he has been since his trial.
The agitator was charged to court for illegal migration, dubious connivance with immigration officers, and an attempt to cause civil unrest in Niger Republic.
Igboho had fled Nigeria to Cotonou after he was declared wanted by the Department of State Services (DSS) who allegedly claimed that weapons were discovered in his house in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Why Sunday Igboho Was Chained In Niger Republic
During an interview with feelrightnewsTV, Igboho’s lawyer disclosed that the freedom fighter was chained to prevent him from turning into a cat and disappearing mysteriously.
“When I arrived from Paris at the custody where Igboho was detained, he was first chained. They were scared that he could just disappear into the thin air because of his mystical powers.
“The police told me that if Igboho’s chains were untied and he escapes mysteriously, he (police officer) will be stripped of his rank and also dismissed.
“The police officer said he was told that Igboho could disappear or turn into a cat, and many other things were said to the police officers which made them tie him,” Fashola said.
He noted it took his timely intervention for the officers to unchain Igboho and allow him to walk freely, explaining Igboho did not commit any offense but he is just a human rights activist.
Sunday Igboho Can’t Return To Nigeria Now
Falola also shared an update on Igboho’s case, revealing that Yoruba activist is very safe in Benin Republic because the Nigerian government of planning to kill him if he returns.
“The case will make revelations as to which government is powerful in Africa, our government may not be wealthy, and not much in population as compared to Nigeria but there is a signed treaty that must be respected.
“Igboho cannot be left to return back to Nigeria for now because of the destruction of his properties that was witnessed, they are not looking for Sunday Igboho alone but planning to kill him.
“They are looking for how to kill him and that’s very dangerous to allow him return back to Nigeria. So he is being kept safe in custody.”
“This case has become a global one with many watching the developments, all Yorubas especially in Diaspora, monarchs, traditionalists, others are keenly following the case,” Falola stated.
Although the investigation is still ongoing, Falola explained he is monitoring the developments going on in Nigeria before any application for Igboho’s freedom in court can be made.
The lawyer added that if Igboho is released, he may proceed to Germany to see his children and family instead of coming back to Nigeria.
KanyiDaily had reported how a former president, Olusegun Obasanjo recently traveled to Benin Republic to seek a soft landing for the Yoruba Nation activist.
