Yobe State Police Command has arrested a 22-year-old housewife, Khadija Yakubu, for allegedly poisoning her four stepchildren in Malaria Huta community, Potiskum Local Government Area of the state.
The command spokesman, ASP Dungus Abdulkareem, who disclosed this in a statement on Friday, said the suspect poisoned the tea drank by four children of her husband’s first wife.
Abdulkareem said three of the victims died while receiving treatment and one other remained unconscious after being rushed to a hospital.
“Findings at hand indicated that the children have been rushed to hospital after taking the tea prepared by the said suspect in the early hours of today at about 0900hrs, 17 Sep, 2021, but three of the victims died while receiving treatments and one remained unconscious.
“Alhaji Haruna, who is the husband to the said suspect of the same area in Potiskum, reported the incident to the police at about 1300hrs”, the police spokesman said.
According to him, the victims were: Umar Alh Haruna, aged 12; Ahmed Alh Haruna, aged 9; Maryam Alh Haruna, aged 11 as well as a 7-year-old Zainab Alh Haruna.
ASP Abdulkarim added that investigation has commenced to unravel circumstances surrounding the case for subsequent prosecution.
