The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa has slumped while delivering a speech at a programme in the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The 41-year-old was giving his goodwill message on Thursday at the National Identity Day celebration when he suddenly became emotional, attributing his demeanour to the death of a member of staff of the commission.
“Please, excuse me, I can’t continue,” Bawa had said before he walked off the stage and slumped on his chair as other attendees rushed to help him.
Bawa was then rushed out of the hall by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Mr. Isa Pantami, who later returned and said the EFCC boss was now in a stable condition.
Pantami later told journalists that the reason why Bawa collapsed in Aso Rock was “due to pressure and work burden.”
The minister urged Nigerians to pray for Bawa who was grieving the loss of a colleague, stressing that he has regained consciousness.
The EFCC in a statement by its Head, Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren, has assured the public that Bawa is hale and hearty, adding that he has since received medical attention.
“The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Commission, EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa is hale and hearty.
“This clarification became necessary following an incident today September 16, 2021 at the Presidential Villa, Abuja where he was giving a goodwill message to the National Identity Day celebration, felt unwell and had to return to his seat.
“He has since received medical attention and is due back at his desk,” the statement said.
