Video games have developed from humble beginnings with Pong and Space Invaders to a multibillion-dollar industry with single titles selling in the hundreds of millions of dollars. There have been series franchises, to first-person shooters, right through to best sports video games. There have been considerable swings in the mainstream market as the audience for video games has increased; only a few huge publishers and popular franchises have established permanent footholds in the list of best-sellers.
In the video game industry, tastes seem to vary regularly. Still, a look at the top-selling games over the previous few years reveals how devoted fans have remained to some of the industry’s most prominent franchises.
The industry’s evolution can be seen in the top-selling games. Nintendo games dominated the charts in the mid-to-late-90s, with Mario, Zelda, and Donkey Kong. Madden hit its stride as the new century began, ruling the charts until the middle of the decade unless a new GTA game was released.

After a brief excursion into music games at the close of the first decade of the twenty-first century, Call of Duty resumed its reign, with only minor interruptions for new releases from Rockstar Games; the creators of Grand Theft Auto, and Red Dead Redemption. Let’s have an in-depth look at some of these titles and see what sets them apart from the competition.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War – 2021 & 2020
We all know Call of Duty has a massive online multiplayer fanbase, and with the arrival of Warzone, that following has only grown. Many fans, on the other hand, enjoy playing through single-player campaigns each year. With so much emphasis on multiplayer these days, you might be wondering if Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War has a campaign mode. Yes, it does, and it’s a fantastic addition to the Black Ops series. Cold War is a direct sequel to the original Black Ops, taking place 13 years after the first game.
The Cold War was a time when the United States and the Soviet Union were at odds. Following their temporary cooperation during WWII, the fight was centered on both superpowers’ ambition for worldwide domination. This is where the Cold War campaign of Call of Duty Black Ops takes place. In particular, throughout the early 1980s. So expect plenty of espionage, covert missions, double-crossing, and, of course, a few significant gunfights in true Call of Duty fashion.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare – 2019
In 2019, Call of Duty was once again the best-selling game of the year. However, Pokémon Sword and Shield and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order also did well. Activision’s military shooter has dominated the best-seller lists for the previous ten years, and there’s little reason to believe it won’t do so again in the coming decade.
Red Dead Redemption 2 – 2018
The developers of Grand Theft Auto recaptured the No. 1 best-seller title with Red Dead Redemption 2, an open-world cowboy adventure that took more than seven years to develop. The extra time allowed Rockstar Games to beautifully depict America’s western frontier and create a lifelike atmosphere unlike any other open-world game to date. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 came close to overtaking Red Dead Redemption 2 as the best-selling game of 2018.
Call of Duty: WWII – 2017
The American-centric campaign in Call of Duty: WWII centers on the latter stages of the conflict. It focuses on recounting the tale of the Western Front, including critical events such as the D-Day landings on Normandy Beach and the Battle of the Bulge. The entirety of the campaign is seen through the perspective of Ronald “Red” Daniels, a replacement soldier who isn’t a seasoned veteran when the game begins. The Texan enrolled in the army despite having a wife and a child on the way to fight in his brother’s honor.

During the Normandy landings, Technical Sergeant William Pierson fights alongside Daniels and his colleagues as they advance along the beach, eliminating bunkers along the way. He accepts our hero into the elite 1st Infantry Division after the conflict is ended.
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare – 2016
Infinite Warfare was even more of a departure from the previous Call of Duty games, focusing entirely on a future sci-fi setting. Even though it was the best-selling game for the third year in a row, the game underperformed Activision’s expectations.
Call of Duty: Black Ops III – 2015
Despite being the best-selling game of the year once again, Black Ops III fell short of its predecessors in terms of sales, indicating waning enthusiasm in the franchise. The game was not without flaws and fans and critics alike claimed that the Call of Duty format had become boring over time.
