The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested the immediate past governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport, Lagos State.
The former governor, who has been on the commission’s watchlist for months, was arrested on Thursday night, March 17, hours after handing over to his successor, Governor Charles Soludo.
It was gathered that Obiano was trying to flee Nigeria to Houston Texas in the United States when the EFCC operatives picked him up at the Lagos Airpot at about 8.30 pm.
When contacted by Vanguard, the EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed Obiano’s arrest, saying the ex-governor had been detained in Lagos pending further actions by the anti-graft agency.
The arrest comes four months after the EFCC requested the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to inform it anytime Willie Obiano is travelling out of the country from any of the international airports, as well as other points of entry and exit.
KanyiDaily recalls that the former Anambra Commissioner for Information, Don Adinuba had claimed that the EFCC watchlist reports were politically motivated, insisting that Obiano would return to his original base in the US after leaving office.
