Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has appointed Musiliu Akinsanya popularly known as MC Oluomo as the chairman of the management committee of all motor parks and garages in the state.
The development comes hours after the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) sacked MC Oluomo as the chairman of its Lagos State chapter.
In a statement on Thursday, April 7, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso said the government has set up a 25-member committee chaired by MC Oluomo to oversee the affairs of all motor parks and garages in the state.
According to him, the establishment of the Parks Management Committee in fulfillment of the government’s promise to ensure that events NURTW are not allowed to threaten law and order.
The statement read in part, “The Lagos State Government has set up a committee to oversee the affairs of all motor parks and garages in the state.
“This is in fulfillment of the government’s promise to ensure that events in the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) are not allowed to threaten law and order.
“The government has, therefore, exercised its constitutional powers to ensure that no vacuum, which can disrupt the peace of our dear state, is allowed to exist in the parks. This is a duty we owe all Lagosians and visitors.”
Omotosho pointed out that the members of the committee have been selected following consultations with stakeholders in the sector.
Omotoso said that members of the committee were to report to the Ministry of Transportation, Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja.
KanyiDaily recalls that March 9, 2022, the national leadership of the NURTW had suspended MC Oluomo over alleged misconduct, insubordination and incitement.
The NURTW national body had also accused MC Oluomo of incitementing violence and planning to attack the union branches that fail to obey his instructions.
Following his suspension, MC Oluomo announced the withdrawal of the Lagos NURTW from the national body as he called on the state government to take over the management of motor parks in the state to resolve the crisis in the union.
On March 10, Lagos State Government suspended the activities of the activities of NURTW in the state, saying the decision was necessary to douse the mounting tension regarding the struggle for the union’s leadership in the state.
The NURTW dissolved its Lagos State council under MC Oluomo on Wednesday, April 6, and asked the affected members to hand over properties of the state chapter to Seyi Bankole, the Lagos secretary.
Explaining why it dismissed MC Oluomo, the NURTW said the former Lagos Chairman was granted a pardon after the mediation of the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and other leaders, but he refused to apologise.
