Nigerian Army Opens Fire On Students Protesting Prolonged ASUU Strike In Akure [Video]

Nigerian Army has opened fire on some students protesting against the prolonged strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in Akure, Ondo State.

ASUU Strike

KanyiDaily recalls that ASUU had embarked on a warning strike since February 14, over the failure of the federal government to meet its demands.

Amid the strike, the government and the union have held a series of meetings, but no agreement has been reached by both sides on ending the strike.

On Monday, May 16, angry students from various universities in Ondo took to the streets to express their displeasure by blocking Ilesha/Akure highway while demanding for necessary actions to be taken so they can return to their distinct classrooms.

Soldier Shoot Protesting Students

It was gathered that on Tuesday morning, soldiers invaded the area and started shooting indiscriminately while destroying the equipment of the protesting students.

In a viral video, one of the aggrieved students was heard saying: “The Nigerian Army; they came here and started shooting. See all our things. See what the Nigerian Army did to us.”

“The Nigerian Army that should protect us; see our equipment. We were here peacefully. We are fighting for our rights. See all our things,” another student fumed in the video.

KanyiDaily recalls that President Buhari had pleaded with the ASUU to consider the plight of students and call off the ongoing strike, adding that students should exercise patience as the federal government is working on resolving the strike.
