Anthony Joshua Loses Rematch To Oleksandr Usyk

During the fight on Saturday night, August 21, Usyk defeated Joshua for the second time to defend his WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO world heavyweight titles.

While Uysk clearly dominated the first fight against Joshua, it was a bit different in Saturday’s rematch as the Nigeria-born fighter gave a better challenge even though it was still not enough to earn him the win he badly craved for.

Joshua certainly looked a lot better than he had 11 months prior but Usyk proved why he is one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world right now.

As one would have rightly predicted, both boxers started the first round on a cautious note although Usyk eventually found Joshua’s head and the challenger landing to the body.

In the second round, Joshua, the taller man, attempted to be more aggressive and let his right hand go, but it was still tough to find the target against the agile Usyk, who was able to land his jab quite regularly.

The third round was a closer one, and may have even gone the way of the Nigerian, but he was still not quite managing to let his hands go in the face of Usyk’s constant movement.

After a ding dong affair, the fight did come alive in the ninth round as Joshua found Usyk’s body early on and then sprang into action with several good combinations, pushing his opponent against the ropes and around the ring.

For all that Joshua had to give, Usyk had a bit more to offer, and that eventually saw him retaining the world titles after being declared the winner via unanimous decision.

Anthony Joshua Reacts Angrily To His Defeat

The Nigerian-born boxer didn’t seem to take his defeat to Usyk in their second meeting very well as he stormed out of the ring and almost left the arena after the result was announced.

A livid Joshua had asked Usyk, “You’re not strong, how did you beat me? I had character and determination.”

The former heavyweight champion threw two of the victors’ three belts out of the ring before storming out of it himself on what was a hot night.

Joshua soon returned but, quite clearly, the 32-year-old’s emotions were still getting the better of him. Having appeared to exchange angry words with Usyk he then took to the microphone and, in front of a crowd of about 10,000 gathered at this venue, delivered a curious monologue.

The 23-year-old said, “Usyk is one hell of a fighter. That’s just emotion.

“If you knew my story, you’d understand the passion. I’m not an amateur boxer. I was going to jail and I got bail and I started training. If I got sentenced, I wanted to be able to fight.

“It shows the passion we put into this. For this guy to beat me tonight, it shows the levels of hard work he must have put in so please give him a round of applause as heavyweight champion of world.

“They said that I’m not a 12-round fighter. I ain’t 14 stone, I’m 18 stone, I’m heavy. It’s hard work. This guy here is phenomenal. We’re going to cheer for him three times.”

And the crowd did, still, however, quite clearly confused by what was happening. Perhaps Joshua didn’t know what he was doing, or saying, either. It certainly felt like heat-of-the-moment stuff, provoked by a very real sense of hurt and disappointment.
