Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has extended the ban on the operations of commercial motorcycles, better known as okada, in four more Local Government Areas and five Local Council Development Areas.
KanyiDaily recalls that in May, Sanwo-Olu announced a total ban on Okada operations in six LGAs, which include Ikeja, Surulere, Eti Osa, Lagos Mainland, Lagos Island and Apapa.
In a statement on Thursday, August 18, Lagos commissioner for transportation, Frederic Oladeinde said the governor has approved the second phase of the ban on commercial motorcycles.
According to him, the Lagos government has extended the ban in four more LGAs including Kosofe, Oshodi-Isolo, Shomolu, and Mushin.
The commissioner said the ban also affects the local council development areas (LCDAs) that make up the affected LGAs.
The affected LCDAs are Kosi-Isheri, Agboyi-Ketu, Isolo, Ejigbo, Bariga and Odi-Olowo. The ban will be effective from September 2022.
Oladeinde said the decision was taken in order to improve the peace and security of the state.
“Mr Governor has approved the ban of okada in another four LGAs and six LCDAs for the second phase of the total ban in addition to the ongoing ban in the six LGAs,” the commissioner said.
The Lagos government has so far placed a ban on okada in 10 LGAs in the state.
KanyiDaily recalls that Hausa community leaders had appealed to Governor Sanwo-Olu to reverse the ban on Okada operations in Lagos, promising to vote massively for him if he reveese the ban.
