An operative of the new Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has been caught on camera going through the phone of a young man identified as Oyale Peter.
In a video circulating on social media, the security operative was seen checking the man’s phone in his vehicle despite warnings from the Inspector-General of Police that it is “unlawful” to do so.
Sharing the video on his Twitter page, Peter wrote: ”New SWAT stopped us and started searching our phones. Thought this was meant to be over.”
Reacting to the outrage trailing the video, Police spokesman, CSP Prince Olumuyiwa Adejobi said he has reported the erring officer to the appropriate authorities for punishment.
Adejobi tweeted: “We have taken up this, yet another case. We have informed the CP SWAT, CP Kolo Yusuf and DIG FCID, we hope to fish them out asap.
“Since some of our men are bent on denting the image of the NPF, and deviate from our SOP, we wont mind giving them their “doses” and sanctions.”
KanyiDaily recalls that the former Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Adamu had declared that no police officer of any unit should look into people’s phones or profile them to see whether they are ‘yahoo boys or not.’
