Ghana has disowned a travel advisory issued on Wednesday, warning its citizens to avoid non-essential trips to the Nigerian capital Abuja over security concerns.
KanyiDaily recalls that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration had warned Ghanaians against traveling to Abuja due to the “high danger of terrorism, criminality, inter-communal conflict, armed attacks, and kidnappings”.
The ministry in a statement said the travel advisory follows the precarious situation in Abuja and the subsequent directive by Nigerian local authorities to hotels operating in residential buildings to shut down.
However, in another statement on Thursday, the Ministery said it is not aware of any threat targeted at Ghanaians living in Nigeria, stressing that the travel advisory published on Wednesday, November 16 was unauthorized.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration wishes to refer to the travel advisory published this evening, Wednesday, November 16, 2022, advising against non-essential travel to Abuja and wishes to state that the statement was unauthorised.
“The Ministry is not aware of any threat targeted at Ghanaians who continue to live in harmony with their Nigerian brothers and sisters.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration regrets any inconvenience this may have caused to the travelling public,” the statement reads.
The development comes weeks after the United States and some foreign missions warned its citizens against trips to Nigeria’s Abuja capital over terror threat.
