Suspected kidnappers have demanded N100million ransom for two medical doctors who were abducted by gunmen in Cross River.
Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Felix Archibong disclosed this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday.
Archibong said the medical doctors, who are members of the association, were kidnapped on Friday at the Ikomita area of the Calabar-Ikom highway while on their way back to Ogoja after attending a workshop in Calabar, the state capital.
He said two other persons were abducted alongside the two doctors, adding that the gunmen have demanded the sum of N100 million as a ransom for their release.
Sources said that the abducted medical doctors are Dr Omini Joshua, a medical officer working with General Hospital, Ugep and Dr Etim Ekpo Egong popularly known as Floxy.
It was gathered that gunmen blocked the highway during the operation and shot sporadically into the air to scare away passers-by and zoomed off immediately after they succeeded in abducting seven victims.
A witness said out of the seven persons they kidnapped, three were females and four were males.
According to him, the hoodlums later released the three females, after dispossessing them of their valuables including phones, watches and cash, and took the four males away into the bush.
The commissioner of police in the state, Sule Balarabe, who confirmed the incident, said the command is currently working to ensure the release of the abductees.
“We are going to comb the forest to secure their release. I assure you that the matter will adequately be dealt with. I am not just sitting in Calabar to give orders, I am also on the ground with my men.
“We have the cooperation of the locals, and I believe we will have positive results. I am on the ground with various units.
“We are hitting the nails on its head as I speak, we must make sure we secure the release of the victims unharmed,” Balarabe said.
KanyiDaily had also reported how the police arrested a 28-year-old female serial kidnapper who abducted two boys and collected N70,000 ‘ransom’ in Lagos.
