Angry youths has stormed a police station in Ajah to protest after an Inspector killed a 31-year-old man, Gafaru Buraimoh, a resident of Happy Land Estate, Ajah, Lagos State.

Police Kills Man In Lagos

It was gathered that the man was killed by a stray bullet from a trigger-happy Inspector on Tuesday at about 10:00 pm while was coming out of SkyMall.

Sources said that the shooting incident happened when police officers attached to Ajiwe Divisional Police in Ajah were raiding people selling black market fuel at the Ajiwe filling station.

The police officers were said to have started shooting sporadically after attempting to impound a black marketer’s fuel, but he refused.

The deceased brother, Muyideen, who spoke to Vanguard, said Buraimoh was gunned down in the shooting by a police inspector around 10:00 pm on Tuesday.

He said, “The police wanted to arrest those that are selling black markets and they started shooting because they refuse to allow them impound their fuel.

“Unfortunately, Buraimoh was coming out of SkyMall when he was mistakenly hit by a stray bullet.”

Lamenting the father of the deceased, said “I was at home when they called me this morning that I should come, that my son was shot. The DPO CSP Mustapha said they will look into the matter.”

Although the incident was said to have occurred yesterday night, youths who heard about it gathered at the Elemoro Area Police Command in protest from 8am on Wednesday.

It was gathered that the protesting youths blocked the expressways and made it impossible for vehicles to pass, thereby preventing those going to work from getting to their destination.

As the crowd grew, the police were said to have released teargas to scare them but it made the situation riotous.

The riotous crowd was alleged to have vandalised properties and was attempting to burn the police station.

Some residents who took to social media to warn commuters against plying that route, said the crowd was attacking policemen along Ajah Road.

Confirming the incident, Lagos police spokesman, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the police inspector behind the shooting was immediately disarmed and has been detained, as the full-scale investigation has commenced.

He said: “At About 2330hrs of Tuesday, December 06 2022, a shooting incident involving men of Ajah Division, resulted in the unfortunate death of Gafaru Buraimoh of Happy Land Estate, Ajah.

“The officer behind the shooting, an Inspector of Police, was immediately disarmed and has been detained, as full-scale investigation has commenced.

“The Lagos State Police Command through the Area Commander, Elemoro and Divisional Police Officer, Ajah has since notified and established contact with the family.

“The Command, while commiserating with the family of the deceased over the avoidable and most unfortunate incident, gives assurances that the already commenced investigation into the immediate and remote circumstances leading to the shooting will be brought to a speedy and conclusive end, while equally ensuring that justice is served.”
