The leadership of the Labour Party (LP) suffered a devastating blow on Sunday after the governorship candidate of the party in Kano state, Bashir Bashir defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to reports, an associate of Bashir Bashir, who preferred anonymity, the major reason for the defection was the “exclusion of major northern stakeholders in the decision-making process of the party’s campaign”.
Also, the associate said another reason for the defection was the “lack of clear direction on the interest of northern Nigeria”.
Bashir Bashir, it was gathered, held meetings with the APC presidential and vice presidential candidates, Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima respectively.
The meetings were held in Lagos and Abuja, where an agreement was reportedly reached on the terms of defection.
Bashir reportedly promised to mobilise his supporters to vote for the APC presidential candidate.
Meanwhile, during the LP presidential campaign rally in Kano in January, Bashir boycotted the event.
Recall that a few days ago, the LP governorship candidate in Jigawa state, Yusuf Tsoho decamped to the APC.
