Pope Appoints Nigerian, Archbishop Fortunatus Nwachukwu Secretary Of Dicastery For Evangelisation

A Nigerian-born Archbishop Fortunatus Nwachukwu has been appointed by Pope Francis as the Secretary of the Dicastery for Evangelisation, Section for First Evangelisation, and the New Particular Churches.

According to the Vatican News, the appointment of Fortunatus Nwachukwu was announced on Wednesday by the Holy See Press Office.

Archbishop Nwachukwu, the titular Archbishop of Acquaviva, has served since 17 December 2021 as the Holy See’s Permanent Observer to the United Nations and Specialised Institutions in Geneva and to the World Trade Organisation.

He also served as the Representative of the Holy See to the International Organisation for Migration.

Reports say Archbishop Nwachukwu was born on May 10, 1960. He was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Umuahia, Abia State in Nigeria on June 17, 1984, and was later incardinated into the Diocese of Aba on April 2, 1990.

Archbishop Nwachukwu was appointed by the late Pope Benedict XVI appointed him as the Apostolic Nuncio to Nicaragua and made him the Titular Archbishop of Acquaviva in 2012.

He later served in the Antilles from 2017 as the Apostolic Nuncio to Trinidad and Tobago, as well as to Barbados, Dominica, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and Grenadines, and Guyana.

Archbishop Nwachukwu took on the role of Apostolic Nuncio to Saint Lucia, Grenada, Bahamas, Suriname, and Belize in 2018, according to Vatican News.

In other news, Kanyi Daily reported that a man, Ismaila Adamu, has been remanded for allegedly defiling a five-year-old girl.

Justice Abiola Soladoye of Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court, on Wednesday, remanded Adamu, for allegedly ejaculating on the girl.
