Mbadinuju died at the age of 78, according to a family statement issued on Tuesday night.
The deceased served as the governor of Anambra between May 1999 and May 2003.
He had served as a personal assistant to Jim Nwobodo, a former governor of Enugu, between 1979 and 1980, before playing the same role for Shehu Shagari, former Nigeria’s president, between 1980 and 1983.
According to the statement, the former governor passed at the National Hospital Abuja after a brief illness.
Reacting to Mbadinuju’s demise, Atiku in a short statement posted on his official Twitter handle, said he was sad when he heard of his passing away.
According to him, “Mbadinuju was a quiet politician of note who saw no need for unnecessary bickering and crisis-ridden politics in Anambra State when he lost the 2003 election.”
Atiku condoled his family and the government of Anambra state on the loss of “this illustrious son and father” who according to him, still had much to contribute to the development of the state in particular and Nigeria in general.
“May God continue to comfort the family and grant his soul eternal rest,” the former Vice President wrote.
Meanwhile, Kanyi Daily reported that the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the February 25th general election, Peter Obi has also mourned a former Anambra State Governor, Chinwoke Mbadinuju.
