The ongoing trooping and presentation of colours ceremony is presided over by the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, Muhammadu Buhari, dressed in military uniform.
53 regimental colours used in the order of battle were retired by President Buhari while he witnessed the issuance of colours to 28 newly created units bringing the number units in the Nigerian Army to 81.
Dignitaries at the ceremony included the Former president of Nigeria Goodluck Jonathan, Yakubu Gowon, the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Faruk Yahaya, and the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba.
Others are the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, the Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Awwal Gambo, the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, among others, and members of the National Executive Council.
Buhari also reviewed over 1000 Nigerian Army officers who are standing at attention on the parade ground.
The last time The Nigerian Army had a Trooping event was in 2007 and since then, new units have been established and operationalized.
According to the Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, ”most of the colours in the Nigerian Army have been involved in various geopolitical zones of the country as well as foreign countries, hence deserving retirement and presentation of new colours.
