The title is the first Serie A title won by Napoli since 1990 when the legendary Argentine star, Diego Maradona helped the Italian side clinch the coveted trophy.
Victor Osimhen wrote his name into the Serie A history books after scoring his 22nd goal of the season to help Napoli clinch their third league title with a record-equalling five games to play.
Needing only a draw to take an unassailable 16-point lead with five games remaining, Osimhen equalized for Napoli in the 52nd minute to spark wild celebrations throughout Naples, inside the stadium in Udine, and beyond.
Napoli’s 16-point lead over second-placed Lazio leaves them with a month-long parade between now and the end of the season which will allow their long-suffering supporters to fully unload more than a generation of frustration.
Osimhen’s 22nd goal eclipsed Samuel Eto’o’s record of 21 goals set in the 2010/11 season when the Cameroonian striker played with Inter, making the Lagos-born forward the highest-scoring African player in a single Serie A season.
Not satisfied with one record, Osimhen also equaled the record of Liberian star, George Weah, to become the African player with the most Serie A goals of all time.
Osimhen’s 46th goal in his Serie A career has seen him draw level with Weah and above every other African player in the league’s history to continue his impressive Italian legacy.
Weah scored 46 goals in 114 Serie A games playing for Milan in Serie A between 1995 and 2000, while Osimhen has equaled that goal tally in only 78 matches for Napoli since he joined the club in 2020.
After the game on Thursday night, Napoli fans at the Diego Maradona stadium couldn’t hide their joy as they chanted the name of Victor Osimhen.
Besides the 11,000 Napoli fans inside and 5,000 more outside the stadium in Udine in northern Italy, a capacity crowd of more than 50,000 watched the match on jumbo screens at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in Naples.
KanyiDaily recalls that Victor Osimhen is wanted by Manchester United, Real Madrid, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich, but he insisted that he still has a future in Napoli, stressing that he has no plans to leave the club next summer.
