KanyiDaily recalls that Seun Kuti turned himself to the police on Monday, after the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, ordered his arrest for slapping an officer on Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos.
On Tuesday, Seun Kuti was arraigned before the Yaba Magistrate’s Court to face charges of assaulting a police officer, a violation of Section 356 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act.
While the police prayed to the court to remand Kuti for 21 days, the magistrate ordered that the defendant be remanded in police custody for 48 hours to allow the police to conclude their investigation.
The court also ruled that “after 48 hours, the defendant will be granted bail in the sum of N1m with two responsible sureties, a three years tax payment receipt that is verifiable; one of the sureties must have a landed property within the court jurisdiction.”
The magistrate adjourned the case for mention to May 23, 2023.
While being remanded, the police reportedly stormed Kuti’s residence on Akin Osiyemi, off Allen Avenue, Ikeja, in search of exhibits, while also seizing his wife’s mobile phone.
According to Punch, the policemen took the musician along during the search, while they combed his apartment in search of exhibits.
“The police officers invaded Seun’s home here on my street, Akin Osiyemi, and he was in the vehicle with them while on handcuffs.
“They stormed his apartment in search of exhibits. But they also seized his wife’s phone before driving off with Seun Kuti,” the eyewitness said.
But SaharaReporters learnt that the officers invaded Seun’s residence in Lagos and thoroughly combed it as they fished for evidence to charge him with a separate crime.
“The police came with him to search his house and seized his wife’s phone. They’re are looking for evidence to charge him with a different crime,” a source privy to the operation told SaharaReporters on Tuesday.
KanyiDaily had reported how Seun Kuti’s wife was driven away from the police station by officers, who subjected her to verbal abuse and threatened to arrest her as an accomplice when she brought food for him.
