KanyiDaily had published a viral video showing the moment Seun Kuti assaulted and slapped a police officer on Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba ordered the arrest of the musician and also directed that a probe be carried out to ascertain the facts of the case.
It was gathered that policemen stormed Kuti’s Lagos resident on Saturday night and Sunday morning to arrest him, but did not meet him.
Kuti, who was suspected to have gone into hiding, turned himself in to the police on Monday morning, accompanied by his lawyer and a family representative.
In a statement shared on Monday via his Twitter page, the Lagos State Police Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed Kuti’s arrest after he turned himself in at the police station.
The statement reads; “SERIOUS ASSAULT ON POLICE OFFICER: SEUN KUTI TURNS SELF IN. Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, in the early hours of today turned himself in at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja, in company of his lawyer and family representative.
“He has been placed under arrest in line with the law.
“The Command appreciates the public for their concern and assures that the ongoing investigation will be detailed, transparent, professionally pursued; and justice will be manifestly served for all parties involved.”
KanyiDaily recalls that Seun Kuti had previously defended his action, claiming that the policeman he slapped attempted to kill him and his family members.
