Rochas Okorocha Escapes Death As Gunmen Attacks His Convoy, Kills Police Officer

Former Imo State Governor, Senator Rochas Okorocha escaped death on Sunday when gunmen attacked his convoy, leading to the unfortunate death of a police officer.

It was gathered that Okorocha’s convoy was attacked in the Ihube community along the Okigwe-Enugu expressway, while on his way to attend the burial of Dorothy Ihedioha, the mother of Emeka Ihedioha, former governor of Imo state.

Confirming the incident, Okorocha revealed that the slain police officer was part of the security detail assigned from the state Government House to accompany him to the burial ceremony of Ihedioha’s late mother.

He spoke on Sunday at Amaimo in the Ikeduru Local Government Area of the state, at the birthday anniversary celebration of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the November 11 governorship election in Imo state, Samuel Anyanwu.

The ex-governor revealed that he had just returned from attending the burial ceremony of the wife of a former Senate President, Ken Nnamani, in Enugu when the incident occurred.

Okorocha stated that Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu had provided vehicles and security personnel for his journey back to Imo State for the burial ceremony of Ihedioha’s mother.

He disclosed that it was after he had finished attending the funeral ceremony at Mbaise and the convey had dropped him at his Spilbat mansion in Owerri and was heading back to Enugu that they were attacked.

The former governor expressed anger over the prevailing situation in Imo, stating that he felt safe in Enugu but was attacked and lost a security agent in his own state.

He criticized those vying for governance without the capability to lead. He hinted at an individual he believed was fit for the role but indicated that he would disclose more details at the appropriate time.

“I am angry. I  am very angry. I am angry because I spent two days in Enugu and nothing happened to me but it is in my own state that the convoy released to me by the governor of Enugu state (a very good man) to attend the burial ceremony of Ihedioha’s mother at Mbaise that was attacked and one policeman killed.

“What is happening in Imo state makes me angry. Many people who are running to govern Imo state are not capable but I have seen one man who the cap fits. When it is time I will speak,” Okorocha said.

One of Okorocha’s aides, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that the attackers shattered the vehicles in the convoy, which included a Sports Utility Vehicle, a bus, and a Hilux.

The source also revealed that two other security agents were kidnapped during the attack but were later released on the same day.

KanyiDaily had also reported how Gunmen killed four staff members of the United States Embassy in Nigeria, who were on a humanitarian mission in Anambra State.
