“Churches Used To Pay Me N5,000” – Simi Reveals Why She Stopped Doing Gospel Music

Nigerian singer, Simi has shared her past experiences as a gospel artiste, revealing that she used to receive meager performance fees ranging from N5,000 to N10,000.

Simi, who disclosed this during her appearance on MTV Base Africa’s “Official Naija Top 10” interview segment, said the highest payment she ever received during that time was N70,000.

The mother of one, best known for her hit song “Duduke,” also opened up about her humble beginnings in the gospel music scene.

She said, “I actually used to go to a lot of churches to perform. They will pay me like N5k, N10k.

“Do you know the highest amount of money I actually collected when I was doing gospel [music]? N70,000. And I felt like I had arrived. I still paid a 10 per cent tithe from the money.”

The singer said that as time went on, she faced financial challenges in funding studio sessions and promoting her music which led her to make the difficult decision to transition to secular music.

She also stated that due to financial constraints, she signed with a record label that she now regrets before switching to secular music.

Despite the challenges she encountered in the gospel music industry, Simi’s switch to secular music has undoubtedly proven successful, and she has since become a prominent figure in the Nigerian music scene.
