The military on Wednesday night, announced on state television that it had overthrown the government of President Mohamed Bazoum.
The coup comes hours after President Bazoum was held inside the presidential palace by the presidential guard in the country’s capital, Niamey on Wednesday morning.
The president was eventually kicked out despite widespread condemnation that greeted his detention.
The military junta quickly announced the immediate closure of the country’s borders and a nationwide curfew that was imposed indefinitely.
Reacting, Shehu Sani in a tweet on his handle on Thursday, said military rule must be totally rejected and resisted in West Africa.
He also said, “Our democracy is not perfect and there is no perfect democracy anywhere. Military rule is not the solution.”
According to him, “I’m surprised to read comments in the social media, it appears that many young people are now in support of it.”
Sani noted that he understands the disappointment and the frustration with the political class.
He, however, added that “It’s still better we continue to struggle to make our democracy better until we get it right.”
Meanwhile, Kanyi Daily earlier reported that the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) through its Chairman, Bola Tinubu said attempts by the military to seize power was unacceptable. He then sent a delegation to the country, which is Nigeria’s neighbour to the north.
