Since taking office on May 29, the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) or petrol has increased more than threefold, from below N200 per litre in less than two months due to the removal of fule subsidy during his inaugural speech.
The removal of the fuel subsidy has led to economic difficulties, resulting in protest and strike calls from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
Speaking to the youth of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, President Tinubu requested understanding as the “economic reforms” begin to take effect.
Acknowledging the hardships faced by Nigerians and empathizing with their struggles, Tinubu emphasized the necessity of removing a long-standing issue like the subsidy that had persisted for over four decades.
The president expressed his firm disapproval of a few privileged individuals exploiting the country and reassured the people that such behavior is not acceptable.
President Tinubu encouraged Nigerians to persevere through the challenging transition, as it is essential for the nation’s future greatness.
He acknowledged that making the necessary changes would not be easy but emphasized that the current difficulties are paving the way for a better tomorrow.
“I can assure you that I understand your pains and the pains of your uncles, brothers, your mums. I understand, I feel it. It is not easy to get out a monster of over 40 years that is called subsidy.
“For few leaders, elites, fleecing Nigeria, it’s not acceptable and will never be acceptable to us all. You’ve endured, you just need to persevere a little bit more.
“It’s not going to be easy to make the changes necessary, but what we are going through today is saving for greatness, tomorrow.” he said
The President told the youths that his administration would include them in governance and decision-making processes, adding that “No decision would be too difficult for his administration to take for the prosperity and unity of the nation.”
Tinubu noted that his administration would do everything necessary to widen the net to accommodate more women and youths.
KanyiDaily recalls that Nollywood actress, Eniola Badmus had recently expressed her admiration and support for President Bola Tinubu depite the hike on fuel price across the country.
