According to reports, Justice Nweze, aged 64, died after a brief illness on Sunday, July 30, 2023.
However, the Supreme Court is yet to officially confirm his demise at the time of compiling this report.
Justice Chima Centus Nweze, who hails from Obollo, Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State, was born on September 25, 1958.
The judge gained attention for his dissenting judgment in 2020 when he declared Emeka Ihedioha of the People Democratic Party as the winner of the 2019 Governorship election in Imo State.
He was also part of the panel that rejected the Peoples Democratic Party’s request, led by Atiku Abubakar, to inspect the Independent National Electoral Commission’s server while contesting President Muhammadu Buhari’s victory in 2019.
In 2014, during Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, the National Judicial Council (NJC) recommended Nweze’s appointment to the Supreme Court, which was subsequently approved.
With the unfortunate demise of Justice Chima Centus Nweze, the South East region is currently left without a single representative in the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
This comes four months after a former Judge of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), in the Hague, Netherlands, Bola Ajibola died at the age of 89 after a long-time illness.
