Foster has gathered over 3,000 signatures on an online petition, advocating for the lake’s complete drainage, cleaning, and restoration to enhance safety measures for water-related activities.
“Draining, cleaning, and restoring Lake Lanier is not only necessary but also an opportunity to honor the memory of those who have lost their lives and prevent further tragedies,” Foster wrote in her change.org petition, which she has also shared on her Instagram page.
“Only when the massive lake is completely drained can officials safely remove hazardous material and implement improved safety measures at the lake to ensure the well-being of all individuals engaging in personal watercraft and recreational activities.”
In July 2012, Tameka Foster’s 11-year-old son, Kile Glover, was floating on an inner tube in Lake Lanier when a jet ski driven by family friend, Jeffrey Hubbard collided with him.
Kile, the son of Bounce TV founder Ryan Glover and stepson of Usher, was declared brain-dead and eventually passed away after being kept on life support for two weeks.
Jeffrey Hubbard responsible for the accident was convicted of several charges, including homicide by vessel, and sentenced to serve four years in prison and 15 years on probation.
In her petition, Foster argued that draining Lake Lanier is crucial for removing hazardous material and implementing improved safety measures to prevent future accidents.
She highlighted the high number of boat collisions and deaths that have occurred on the lake over the years, emphasizing the urgent need for better zoning and safety regulations.
The fashion designer also raised concerns about the impact of the man-made lake’s construction on water currents and its potential danger to recreational users.
Lake Lanier is not only a popular recreational spot but also a crucial source of drinking water for millions of people. Foster proposed that after draining the lake, stricter regulations and zoning should be put in place for water-related activities to ensure the safety of individuals.
Located roughly an hour’s drive northeast of Atlanta, Lake Lanier covers nearly 60 square miles (155 square kilometers) and has waters up to 160 feet (49 meters) deep. It’s far from just a getaway for millions of boaters, anglers and other yearly visitors.
The lake provides drinking water for about 5 million people, according to the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper conservation group. And Buford Dam at the lake’s southern end generates hydroelectric power for the metro Atlanta area.
Tameka Foster and Usher Raymond divorced in 2009 after a tumultuous marriage, and they share two sons, Usher Raymond V and Naviyd.
