Nigeria is currently facing a widespread blackout due to the complete failure of the national electricity grid in the early hours of Thursday morning, September 14, 2023.
It was gathered that the grid suffered a total collapse at about 12:40 a.m., resulting in a massive loss of power supply to distribution companies across the country.
Multiple sources within the power sector and electricity distribution companies have confirmed this situation to newsmen on Thursday morning.
Ndidi Mbah, the spokesperson for the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), confirmed the development, saying “It is a system collapse, but we are trying to restore it.
“When there is a system disorder, our priority is to see that it is fully restored, and that is when we can start saying this is from them or that is from them, but restoration is ongoing.”
Emeka Ezeh, the head of corporate communications at the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) Plc, also confirmed the grid’s collapse at around 12:40 a.m.
According to him, this collapse has resulted in the loss of power supply across the distribution company’s service areas, affecting Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States.
Ezeh said the EEDC is awaiting further information on the collapse and the restoration of supply from the National Control Centre (NCC) in Osogbo.
He said, “Due to this development, all our interface TCN stations are out of supply, and we are unable to provide service to our customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo States.”
“We are on standby awaiting detailed information of the collapse and restoration of supply from the National Control Centre (NCC), Osogbo.”
About a week ago, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) celebrated what it described as 400 days of power grid stability in Nigeria, as it claimed that the grid witnessed no collapse all through the 400 days.
