Third Mainland Bridge Maintenance Set To Commence On November 1

The Federal Government disclosed its plans to initiate extensive maintenance activities, including resurfacing and illumination enhancements on the Third Mainland Bridge, set to begin on Wednesday, November 1.

Minister of Works, Dave Umahi made this known after an inspection of the underdecks of some bridges in Lagos Island.

This planned three-month maintenance project represents the initial phase of a comprehensive repair effort aimed at ensuring the structural integrity and visual appeal of the upper deck of the bridge.

Among the bridges surveyed were the Third Mainland Bridge, Carter Bridge, Independence Bridge, and the Shoreline Protection at Marina, in addition to the Iganmu and Marine Beach Bridges.

Umahi explained that the effort to enhance the visual appeal of the Third Mainland Bridge will encompass activities such as replacing railings, installing solar-powered lighting, and incorporating CCTV cameras to bolster the bridge’s security measures.

The Minister assured motorists that the repair work would be conducted without causing significant disruption, as it would take place only between midnight and 4 a.m. and only on weekends.

Mr. Umahi said that due to the urgency of the project, multiple contractors would be engaged.
This comprehensive project will culminate in Phase Four, involving the repair of deflected slabs, bearings, piers, and pile caps.

The Minister of Works was accompanied by the Director Bridges, Mr. Omotayo Awosanya, Director Highways, Southwest, Mr. Adedamola Kuti, Controller Works, Lagos, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, and contractors.

Kanyi Daily recalls that the Federal Government had reopened the Third Mainland Bridge merely 24 hours after it had been temporarily closed for essential palliative work.
