This comes a few days after the woman ended her life by committing suicide without confiding in anyone about her struggles in Benin.
Olokoobi and her son, Oreofeoluwa Lawal-Babalola, caught the attention of Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu following the viral video in 2020 where the boy was pleading with his mother to calm down.
An X (formerly Twitter) user reported Mrs. Olokoobi’s demise on Monday, claiming to have been present at the scene.
“The woman in the viral ‘mummy calm down’ video has just committed suicide here in Benin. She refused to speak to anyone about her problems. She left three kids for her husband including the popular mummy calm down boy.”
Another resident of the area, who preferred to remain anonymous, disclosed that the deceased, a medicine distributor, took her life in the presence of her one-year-old son.
The spokesperson of the Edo State Police Command, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed the arrest to journalists in Benin on Friday, stating that the deceased’s husband is in their custody for questioning.
“He came home from the market when he saw his wife hanging with rope on her neck. He alerted the neighbours who followed him to the hospital where she was confirmed dead.
“He’s still with the police and will soon be transferred to the State CID for further investigation,” the spokesman added.
KanyiDaily had published the video showing Lawal-Babalola crying and negotiating with his mother who wanted to punish him for doing something she warned him not to do.
