On Wednesday, January 3, the 33-year-old rapper took to X (formerly Twitter) to disclose her decision to shift her focus to different creative pursuits.
Iggy Azalea expressed her joy in being creative and seeing her ideas materialize, acknowledging her historical use of music as a medium for delivering her ambitious concepts to the world.
“I’ve always been someone who finds my joy in being creative & seeing my ideas come to life. For a long time I used music to deliver my big crazy ideas to the world,” she wrote.
“I know a lot of people have this idea that I was ‘bullied away from music’ and that’s something I’ve always laughed at because I’d never be bullied out of anything!
“In fact, I’m too stubborn. I think I’ve even resisted changes within myself at times, purely because I don’t like being viewed as someone who quits,” she continued.
Azalea then revealed that she would be moving away from music, stressing that her interest in design and creative direction surpassed her dedication to songwriting, a revelation that may not come as a surprise to many familiar with her work.
“In truth what I’ve known for a long time is that I feel more passionately about design and creative direction than I do about song writing,” she explained.
“To many of you that’s no shock to read. It shows in my work. 🥲 Haha! Jokes aside, I do spend a lot more time on that part of things… because I’m most confident at that.”
Azalea disclosed that her album had been on hold for several months as she engaged in directing a different project, confessing that she had not felt the motivation to return to it.
Expressing genuine happiness and passion in her focus on design and creative direction, Azalea stated her intention to follow what she believes is best for her.
Despite apologizing to fans who might feel disappointed, she emphasized the importance of not letting herself down and hoped for understanding.
Azalea concluded her announcement by expressing excitement about sharing the creative projects she has been involved in, highlighting her quirky humor in anything she touches.
She added: “That’s why I want to let you know that I’m not going to finish my album. It’s been paused for a few months while I was giving direction for a different project & in truth I just haven’t felt the urge to go back to it.
The rapper said she feels “really happy & passionate when she’s “focused on that.”
“I want to stick to what’s undeniably best for me,” she said of her decision, adding: “Can’t wait to start sharing some of the things I’ve been involved in creating & hoping you’ll see my quirk & humor in anything I touch!”
The “Black Widow” artist acknowledged the potential disappointment for fans eagerly anticipating new music and offered her apologies, emphasizing the prioritization of her own well-being.
“I know for some fans this probably makes you feel a little deflated – I’m sorry to let you down,” she wrote. “But, it’s more important I don’t let myself down. I hope you’ll understand.”
This retirement comes after Iggy Azalea had previously announced a break from music to focus on other creative projects in 2021.
However, in August 2022, she revealed her return from retirement, citing a willingness to confront the negative energy associated with the music industry and asserting her decision to come back, urging critics to “cry about it.”
