Court Remands Anambra Female Lawyer Who Brutalized Househelp in Police Custody

Mrs. Adachukwu Okafor, a lawyer, has been remanded in police custody by a Children, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Court in Awka, Anambra State, for allegedly brutalizing her 11-year-old househelp.

The woman reportedly inserted a sharp object into the girl’s private area after she failed to complete household tasks.

Earlier that Tuesday, she presented herself before the Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, alleging that the girl had injured herself while trying to avoid punishment.

Okafor initially fled after reports of the incident emerged.
The Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs. Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, declared her wanted and offered a bounty of N2 million before she eventually turned herself in at a police station in Awka.

On Wednesday, the female lawyer was arraigned before the Children, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Court in Awka on a two-count charge related to the willful infliction of physical injuries on Happiness Nwafor, an offense punishable under Section 4(1) of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition and Protection) Laws of Anambra State of Nigeria, 2017.

She entered a plea of not guilty to the charge. Despite her lawyer, Chijioke Nwankwo, moving for bail, the court denied the application. The case was subsequently adjourned to February 28, 2024, for ruling
