Wizkid recently faced backlash after he urged his followers not tohim as an “Afrobeats artiste” and even warned Afrobeats lovers not to download his upcoming album, ‘Morayo’.
Reacting to the criticism trailing his stance, Wizkid urged his critics to broaden their perspectives and knowledge. He suggested utilizing resources like Google for research or embarking on worldly exploration instead of perpetuating ignorance.
Taking the time to elaborate on his position, Wizkid defended his artistic diversity, highlighting his ability to create music across various genres beyond Afrobeat.
Wizkid, who urged his critics to open their minds, likened the categorization to assuming all American artists exclusively produce rap—an oversimplification he deemed absurd.
The singer emphasized his versatility by pointing out the wide range of music he has produced, including his latest album “Made in Lagos,” which he described as a fusion of different musical influences, not solely Afrobeat.
Wizkid criticized the term “Afrobeats,” asserting that it was coined to box in diverse African musical expressions. He credited Fela Kuti with originating Afrobeat but emphasized his inclination toward experimentation and innovation in his craft.
He said, “U lost people always want someone to educate you. U got your phone Google research shit or take a flight and see the world don’t be ignorant and stupid all the time.
“Listen, am I African ? Yes! But I do make all sorts of music. Fine music! But I don’t want these labeled just afrobeats. That’s like saying every American artiste makes rap. That’s stupid.
“This is why no matter how good or amazing the music we make be it RnB or whatever other genre, we all get nominated in one Africa category or the other.
“I’ve made songs from different genres of music. Made in Lagos is not an ” “Afrobeats album. Thats a fusion of different sounds. Real music!
“The word afrobeats was made up by y’all to put all we make into one box. Fela created afrobeat!! I make All sorts of music. Fusion of sounds! “I’m a artiste” before anything else.. True to my art. Not scared to try shit. Now y’all drink some milk!”
KanyiDaily recalls that Burna Boy claimed that Afrobeats often lacks depth and substance, characterizing it as a genre primarily centered around creating a lively and enjoyable atmosphere.
