Akintelure’s spokesperson, Oladapo Akintelure, confirmed the sad news in a statement issued on Tuesday, March 26.
The Ondo APC governorship candidate died in the early hours of Tuesday, following days of concerns raised over alleged threats to his life.
Akintelure reportedly experienced chest pains shortly before his passing.
A medical doctor by profession, Akintelure hailed from Igbotako in Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State.
Last Thursday, he raised an alarm over alleged threats against his life, expressing determination to stand firm in advocating for justice and peace.
“Initially, I hoped these incidents would dissipate over time, yet regrettably, they have escalated to pose a serious threat to my life,” he said in a statement.
“The threats against me only strengthen my resolve to stand up for what is right and just. I will not allow fear to dictate our path forward.
“Let us embrace peace, progress and unity. Our collective strength lies in our to stand together as one, regardless of our differences.”
Paul Akintelure previously served as the deputy governorship candidate for the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) alongside Rotimi Akeredolu, the incumbent Ondo State governor, during the election against Olusegun Mimiko of the Labour Party.
Before his gubernatorial pursuit, he contested in a senatorial election under the platform of the APC but was unsuccessful.
Paul Akintelure’s death comes amidst the intensifying political activities leading up to the Ondo governorship election which is slated for November 16, 2024.
