It was gathered that the soldiers were attacked at Obikabia junction in Ogbor Hill, Aba, by more than 15 masked gunmen who also set their patrol van on fire.
According to video reports posted on social media by a resident, the soldiers were ambushed, resulting in a deadly attack on a day the South-East is mourning the men and women who sacrificed their lives for the cause of the Biafra War of 1967-1970.
In the viral video, men are seen setting a military vehicle on fire with gunshots heard in the background. The streets are empty as residents observe a sit-at-home order.
Later in the video, a soldier appears, with a voice lamenting, “It’s like he is the only one that survived; others have been killed.”
The identities of the attackers are still unknown, and the Nigerian Army has not yet released an official statement about the incident as details are still emerging.
