The actress, whose real name is Wofai Ewu, announced her engagement to Taiwo Cole via Instagram on Saturday, May 4, 2024, sharing affectionate photos of themselves.
Shortly thereafter, photos and videos from their traditional wedding, held in Wofai’s hometown in Ugep, Cross River State, circulated widely on social media.
Taiwo Olakitan Cole’s family swiftly issued a statement on Sunday disowning the union between their son and the actress.
Engr Kunle Cole, speaking on behalf of the family, declared that they were neither informed of nor consented to the traditional wedding.
The family warned against regarding the couple as part of the Cole lineage, asserting that they are not recognized or accepted.
“Images and videos come to our attention showing our son Taiwo getting married to a Wofai Ewa in a traditional ceremony in Ugep, Cross River State.
“This serves to notify all acquaintances, family and friends that the Cole family of Victoria Island Lagos are not aware of any marriage ceremony of our Son Taiwo Olakitan Cole, neither did we grant permission nor support in this regard.
“As such, person(s) parading themselves as new members of the Cole heritage by virtue of this purported event, are not known nor accepted by the family.
“All publications and documents being circulated about this are to be disregarded,” the Coles said.
Amidst the controversy, Kehinde Cole, Wofai’s husband’s twin sister, extended her congratulations to the newlyweds.
Undeterred by her family’s disavowal, Kehinde conveyed her heartfelt blessings to the couple.
“Congratulations to my twin brother and my new sister in love – your union is blessed with love,” she posted on X on Sunday.
In a purported phone conversation between Taiwo’s father and a friend, the ‘father-in-law’ shared insights into the circumstances surrounding the traditional wedding.
He discussed the family’s surprise and dismay at the event, emphasizing their lack of prior knowledge or consent.
Additionally, he raised concerns about the notable age gap between Wofai and Taiwo, citing her age as 38 and his as 30.
Meanwhile, Wofai, seemingly unfazed by her in-laws’ response, took to Instagram, sharing a video of herself and Taiwo with a caption that reads, “Let love lead ❤️❤️❤️❤️😻😻😻#TWO24.”
Meanwhile, actress Zainab Balogun says she keeps her private life off social media to protect the people and things she cherishes the most.
