Edo Assembly Appeals Shaibu’s Reinstatement, Says Omobayo Remains Deputy Gov

Edo State House of Assembly, led by Blessing Agbebaku, has appealed a ruling by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which overturned the impeachment of former deputy governor Philip Shaibu and reinstated him.

The Assembly has also requested a stay of execution on the judgment while the appeal is pending.

On April 8, 2024, the 24-member Edo House of Assembly impeached Shaibu after considering a report from a seven-member investigative panel led by retired Justice S.A. Omonua.

The panel, set up by the state’s Chief Judge Justice Daniel Okungbowa, investigated allegations of gross misconduct, perjury, and leaking government secrets against Shaibu, a former House of Representatives member.

Philip Shaibu was impeached by 18 of the 19 lawmakers present at the plenary session, despite his refusal to appear before the panel.

Following the impeachment, Governor Godwin Obaseki appointed Godwins Omobayo as the new deputy governor, who was inaugurated the same day.

However, Justice Omotosho voided Shaibu’s impeachment and ordered his reinstatement, stating that the Assembly did not follow due process.

The judge also directed the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Kayode Egbetokun, to provide Shaibu with security to resume office and perform his duties, setting aside Omobayo’s appointment as Shaibu’s replacement.

Following the ruling, the Edo Assembly filed for a stay of execution and insisted that Omobayo Godwins remain the deputy governor until the case is resolved.

In a statement on Wednesday, the state Commissioner for Orientation and Communication, Hon. Chris Nehikhare urged the people of Edo State to remain calm and continue their lawful activities.

He said, “Pending the hearing of the appeal of the judgement, the incumbent Deputy Governor, His Excellency, Omobayo Marvellous Godwins remains and continues to serve as the valid deputy Governor of Edo State.

“He will continue to serve in this capacity and would be recognized as such. The government hereby calls on the people of Edo State to remain calm and go about their lawful businesses.”

KanyiDaily recalls that Philip Shaibu had rejected his impeachment by Edo House of Assembly, describing it as illegal and a politically motivated witch-hunt.
