Why Joe Biden Withdrew From 2024 US Presidential Race, Endorsed Kamala Harris

President Joe Biden has announced his decision to withdraw from the 2024 United States presidential election.

In a statement on Sunday, July 21, the 81-year-old US president announced he will no longer be seeking a second term.

Biden threw his support behind the vice president, Kamala Harris, and asked Democrats to donate to her campaign.

There have ben concerns about Biden’s health after his poor performance in a debate with Donald Trump, the Republican nominee.

Biden said that while he wanted to run again, he’s stepping down for the good of the Democratic Party and the country.

The president highlighted achievements during his term, including economic growth, healthcare improvements, veteran care, gun safety laws, and climate legislation.

He said, “My Fellow Americans, Over the past three and a half years, we have made great progress as a Nation.

“Today, America has the strongest economy in the world. We’ve made historic investments in rebuilding our Nation, in lowering prescription drug costs for seniors, and in expanding affordable health care to a record number of Americans.

“We’ve provided critically needed care to a million veterans exposed to toxic substances. Passed the first gun safety law in 30 years. Appointed the first African American woman to the Supreme Court. And passed the most significant climate legislation in the history of the world.

“America has never been better positioned to lead than we are today. I know none of this could have been done without you, the American people. Together, we overcame a once in a century pandemic and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.

“We’ve protected and preserved our Democracy. And we’ve revitalized and strengthened our alliances around the world.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.

“I will speak to the Nation later this week in more detail about my decision. For now, let me express my deepest gratitude to all those who have worked so hard to see me reelected.

“I want to thank Vice President Kamala Harris for being an extraordinary partner in all this work. And let me express my heartfelt appreciation to the American people for the faith and trust you have placed in me.

“I believe today what I always have: that there is nothing America can’t do – when we do it together. We just have to remember we are the United States of America.”

Biden endorsed Harris as the Democratic nominee and, referring to his Republican rival, he added: “Democrats – it’s time to come together and beat Trump.”

Kamala Harris, who is seen as the leading candidate to replace Biden, thanked him for his leadership and vowed to unite the party and the nation to defeat Trump.

Harris said she was “honoured” to have the president’s endorsement, adding “my intention is to earn and win this nomination“.

She thanked Mr Biden for his “extraordinary leadership” and for making a “selfless and patriotic act” by stepping aside.

She said: “I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party – and unite our nation – to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda.

“We have 107 days until Election Day. Together, we will fight. And together, we will win.”

Joe Biden will continue serving as president until his term ends on January 20, 2025.

Calls for Biden to step down grew louder after his weak debate performance on June 27, where he struggled to speak clearly.

Reports suggest former President Barack Obama also had concerns about Biden’s chances in the upcoming election.

KanyiDaily recalls that Joe Biden previously responded to claims about his fitness to run for a second term, saying only God could make him step aside.
