Man City Defeats Manchester United On Penalties To Win Community Shield

Manchester City won the 2024 Community Shield by defeating Manchester United on penalties at Wembley on Saturday afternoon.

Bernardo Silva, coming off the bench, scored a late equalizer for City, forcing the game into a penalty shootout. United’s Alejandro Garnacho had given his team the lead just seven minutes earlier.

Manchester United dominated much of the match but failed to capitalize on their chances during the 90 minutes.

In the penalty shootout, United seemed in control until Jadon Sancho’s shot was saved by Ederson and Jonny Evans missed by chipping the ball over the goal.

Manuel Akanji secured the victory for Manchester City with the decisive penalty after Bernardo had missed City’s first spot-kick, which was saved by Andre Onana. Akanji’s successful shot sealed a 7-6 win.

This victory ended City’s poor run in recent Community Shields and gives them momentum heading into their Premier League opener against Chelsea next weekend. United will start their Premier League campaign against Fulham at Old Trafford next Friday night.

Meanhwile, Manchester United recently agreed personal terms with Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite for a potential summer transfer.
