The video, which has caused widespread outrage online, shows the young woman filming and interacting with her mother, who appears visibly unwell and unkempt.
The lady, who did not reveal her name, introduced the mentally unstable woman as her mother, revealing that her mental health declined after the death of her father.
She said that her mother was able to take care of herself and her siblings, but her condition gradually worsened and she left home for the streets.
The content creator added that she visits her mother from time to time, bringing food and money.
Reacting in a statement on her X page on Monday, Kennedy-Ohanenye called the video “unacceptable and potentially harmful,” saying it was a clear example of exploitation that goes against the values of empathy and care.
The Minister urged the public to show compassion and understanding towards people struggling with mental health issues, emphasizing the need to prevent such exploitation and support those who need it most.
Kennedy-Ohanenye also requested information about the mother’s identity and condition to ensure she receives proper care and protection, offering a reward for help in locating her.
She wrote, “URGENT CONDEMNATION AND CALL TO ACTION”
“We condemn the disturbing video report of a woman’s mental illness being exploited by her daughter for personal gain and social media content. This is unacceptable, potentially harmful, and troubling.
We strongly condemn exploiting vulnerable individuals, especially those struggling with mental health issues. Mental illness demands compassion, understanding, and support – not ridicule or exploitation.
“The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs urgently request information about the mother’s identity and condition to ensure proper care and protection. A reward is offered for prompt location assistance.
“Appropriate actions must be taken to address this situation. We call on everyone to respect the dignity and humanity of those facing mental health issues and report similar instances immediately.
“Let’s work together to prevent exploitation and support those who need it most.”
